The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), established to formalise artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) gold trading and route official gold proceeds through the banking system, generated US$1.871 billion in foreign exchange from its ASM gold trading operations in September 2026, exceeding its monthly target of US$1.4 billion.
The result reflects Ghana’s broader effort to capture more value from its long-standing gold sector, where ASM output has often been marketed through informal channels, and to convert gold trading proceeds into official foreign exchange for market stability and reserve building.
In its announcement issued on Wednesday, September 30, GoldBod said the funds were channelled to authorised commercial banks and the Bank of Ghana.
Of the total, GoldBod sold US$701.3 million to authorised commercial banks against a target of US$700 million to support foreign exchange market stability, while it provided US$1.170 billion to the Bank of Ghana against a target of US$700 million to support reserve accumulation.
The allocation to the central bank was therefore substantially above target, reinforcing GoldBod’s role as a formal channel for ASM gold purchases and as a source of foreign exchange for Ghana’s official reserves and commercial banking system. Read more...
