Accra Mayor Warns Makola Traders Against GH¢10,000 Shop Allocation Scam. #FrizeMedia https://buff.ly/JLmLBO2

Accra Mayor Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey has cautioned traders against individuals demanding GH¢10,000 to register names for shop allocation in the redeveloped 31st December Material Stores at Makola. He spoke after inspecting ongoing work on the four-storey project, accompanied by Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) officials.

The redevelopment replaces the former single-storey material stores with a modern commercial facility designed to accommodate more traders, improve accessibility and provide additional trading space in one of Accra’s busiest commercial areas. The Mayor inspected foundation and ground-level concrete work, erected columns and structural preparations for installing elevators to facilitate movement between floors.

During the inspection on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, he interacted with workers and stressed the importance of sustaining construction momentum to ensure the facility’s early completion. He noted that steady progress was critical to delivering the project on schedule.

Addressing traders afterwards, Mayor Allotey denied that the Assembly had authorised any individual, group or task force member to collect money from traders for registration or future shop allocation. He expressed concern over reports that some individuals were demanding GH¢10,000 from traders under the pretext of registering their names for shops in the new facility.

He dismissed the claims as false and urged traders to disregard such demands. He stressed that registering names with the Assembly is entirely free and explained that neither his office nor the Metropolitan Coordinating Director had approved any arrangement requiring traders to pay to have their names recorded for consideration in the allocation of shops.

The Mayor urged traders to use official AMA channels and report anyone demanding payment for registration or allocation. Traders should verify all information with the Assembly and avoid dealing with unauthorised persons. The project is expected to improve trading conditions at Makola once completed. Read more...
